.22 LR ammo: HP, Subsonic, frangible, ext...
Hi all!
I have been using a great little .22 for the groundhog problem on the farm and really love it.
http://b-abate.smugmug.com/photos/163550068-M.jpg
The only problem was that on both hogs I took neither went down right away. I didn't really expect instant drop with such a small bullet, but i was less than pleased with it's stopping power.
The first shot was with subsonic hollowpoints, and he was still twitching but not up and running.
The second was tonight with "standard" remmington rounds and he was able to dart back towards his hole. If he went the other way he might have crawled under the house and died I put the remaining 3 rounds into his head at close range and he still tried to crawl with his hind legs for a minute or two.
I will try to carry a handgun in the future, but i was wondering if they make any sort of specialty ammo for hunting that actually contains expanding bullets, or some kind of frangible ammo that will drop the small critters and prevent overpenetration (see next item)
ALWAYS BE AWARE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEHIND IT!
I thought I was shooting at a safe angle tonight, but wasn't able to really tell with some bushes in the way. My first round went right through the groundhog, just missed an external AC unit, and put a hole/dent into our brand new indoor arena. Brand f'n new! It just skimmed the side and hit right at a joint of two aluminum sheets. It doesn't look too bad and it was stopped in the skin before it went any further, but it could have been bad. This is why I really want some frangible ammo, even the shotgun would have damaged something. (As bad as it sounds, I can live with a dent vs. the thousands of $$$ his little tunnel would have cost if we had to replace the concrete pad)
So, so sum it up:
1. What kind of ammo will drop a hog the best?
2. Do they make frangible or hunting bullets?
3. Don't shoot brand new buildings (statement, not a question)
4. What is your favorite color?

1. CCI Velocitor or perhaps CCI Stinger if your rifle chamber will allow it. Stingers have a slightly longer case.
2. Not that I'm aware of. A great place to search for info would be at http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/index.php
3. I agree... always know your target and what's beyond.

I wasn't impressed with CCI velociters, I want to try some "quikshot" .22s they are supposed to fragment into 3 parts when they hit.
I also have some Aguilia super fast stuff (can't remember the name but its moving at 1700 fps i think ) that I want to tryThe resident Saiga snob

Ahh yes. I forgot about the CCI Quik Shot ammo. It's segmented to break up into pieces on impact.
Here's good info about it. http://www.firearmstactical.com/briefs27.htm

I seem to be having problems with Midway USA. It loads the page but says there is nothing in the category, after I just saw it. Also the shipping is a little high for two little boxes of .22, might have to check locally.
The Quik Shot reviews are very impressive! I might have to try these out.

I've never used the Quik Shot ammo. I only get to target shoot with my .22 rifle. I'm sure you can find it lots of places. Let me see....

Cool, jumped on Midway (finally) and ordered 7 boxes of CCI ammo. I got Quik Shot, velociters, and regular subsonic HP's
It looks that is the closest thing to "Frangible" I will find and everything I read seems to be positive. i can't wait to try it out and report back. I know the superfast loads will be louder, but it is a good compromise.
Thanks for the help so far. I am still open to any and all suggestions!

Definitely give us a report back on the ammo. I've shot some Velocitors from my Ruger 10/22. At 50 yards they hit the target about 2 inches higher than the Winchester X22 ammo I had used to zero my scope. So the Velocitors are significantly faster.

If you are going to shoot chucks do it in a humane way. Use a .22 Mag. or a .17HMR at the least and not to excede 125 yards. I know zillions have been taken with the .22's, but they desreve a better ending.
Otherwise a centerfire. use a high velocity cartridge to avoid ricochettes. The high velocity bullets usually will blow apart passing through the chuck. I have been hunting chucks exclusively for over 50 years and speak from experience. Most important take no shot unless you are 100% sure of what may be behind the target.
