.223 semi-auto rifle recommendations?
Thanks to all you helpful folk around here I have recently placed an order for a CZ 452 FS. It should arrive Thursday and I'm looking forward to owning my first firearm! That said, I chose the .22 LR caliber for it's affordability, and a bolt-action iron sighted rifle to learn the basics of shooting properly. (call me old-fashioned, but I want to learn on iron sights, not a scope).
That said, obviously the one thing a .22 LR rifle does not do well is home defense. So, hence this thread. I know the .223 Remington is, at least for centerfire rifle cartidges, very easy to find and fairly affordable. I know that the AR-15 and Mini 14 are the most popular choices for semi-auto .223 rifles, but I was wondering what other options are out there?
Thanks!
Cameron

Well, there is the Kel Tec SU-16.

But.....you need and AR.

Noticed you are in Kalifornia........
The AR would have to have a fixed mag or no pistol grip for you. That kind of sucks.
The Kel Tec or Mini would work.

Re: .223 semi-auto rifle recommendations?
Sorry for my ignorance, but what is a "fixed mag"?
The Kel-Tec looks nice, and doesn't break the wallet. I guess in my part of the country I'd have to get the SU-16CA?

P.S. Yes, California has some seriously stupid laws.Last edited by Zeede; April 15th, 2007 at 07:44 PM.

Check your local laws, but I believe you can only have certain features on your rifles. I believe for an AR15 to be owned in CA, you can either...
(A) Have the usual detacheable magazine and take off the pistol grip (which really sucks)
(B) Leave the pistol grip on and buy a CA lower which will not accept regular mags. Instead, you need to break the gun open and hand feed it ever time you run dry. (which sucks worse)
Thus, the Mini and Kel Tec are much better options in your case. Neither has a pistol grip, so they pass.

Sorry Zeede..but you are seriously impacted by Komifornia laws. You could go for a PAR-1... http://www.gunsnet.net/Linx310/model2.htm... but I couldn't own one for other than a joke. Remington makes a 223 that will accept AR15 mags..looks like it is based on a 870. http://www.auctionarms.com/search/di...temnum=7951970

Maybe you should just look for some Real Estate in PA? Then you could have better toys.

Re: .223 semi-auto rifle recommendations?
Blargh. I guess the Remington would be the only other alternative.
Is there another centerfire rifle cartridge that would be similarly affordable, compared to the .223 Remington?
