Default Hmmm, So They Say AK-47 Are Not Accurate... Myth Busted.. Pics

I really had no intentions of playing myth buster, but after a couple recent threads I thought I would post this.

I had to make sure that the 2 AK-47's that I am taking a class with this weekend were zeroed properly, so I decided to post the final results. The rifles are a Arsenal SA M7 Carbine and a Arsenal/Legion SGL20 (Russian SAIGA built by Legion in the Izhmash factory in the custom shop)

Both rifles are fitted with Ultimak rails and Aimpoint Micro T1's. The SA M7 had already been zeroed and had been sitting so I wanted to make sure it still held. The SGL20 I kept changing mounts so it had to be done from scratch. They were shot using a bag as a rest at 27 yds to POA=POI. This setup allows me to keep 8 out of 10 rounds on a paper plate at 75-100 yards shouldered and bang steel at 200.

Here are the result... I put the targets up on the wrong guns but you will get the point. It took 13 rounds to zero the SGL20, then I did 2 5 shot groups in the 3" target once the rifle was zeroed. The SA M7 was shot cold, again using 2, 5 round groups. The targets are shown how they were stapled. The ammo was 124gr Wolf. The final results averaged just under 2" per group.

Also, keep in mind I do not claim to be some super marksman....

Hopefully the folks that always say "AK-47 are not accurate" out of ignorance will finally just fade away...

I have high end AR's that don't get a whole lot tighter groupings than this... Does less than 1" or so really matter.

A writer in one of the gun rags once said "the AK type rifles are more accurate than you think, and the AR15/M16/M4 is more reliable than you think." Actually makes sense. Nice rifles and good shooting!

What class are you taking. I really want to attend an AK specific course one day soon.

Good shooting. Nice to see that AK kicking some butt.

Yanno... you guys will keep saying this until the REAL zombies only have 1/2" heads.

j/k, nice shooting and nice Family Defending Rifles (FDR's).

Even with the Aimpoints, still good enough for me. AFAIK, I always ask myself as I walk up on the targets, "Is it in the kill zone?" Looks like it is. Good shootin'.

Thank You! They are both great rifles. When I do a class I always try and take clones in case of a failure with my primary.

I am taking a class with Larry Vickers! He is as good as it gets... The class is in Va this weekend. One of the members from TOS is riding down with me so it should be fun.

I will post a AAR next week some time with pics and the itinerary and drills taught. The great thing about Larry, is that he is a excellent teacher and loves the platform and enjoys teaching it after teaching so many pistol/carbine classes.

If you watch him on The Military Channel shows on the special forces and weapons etc, he shows his enthusiasm for the platform. He is on frequently, you should check him out... He is funny as shit too.

I hope to get lucky and shoot his STG 44.

Had the argument more times than I can count and once the muzzle it aimed down range they all end to shut up .... amazing ain't it.

Secondly the stopping power of the 7.62 x 39 is exponential in relation to the 223 ... I had a video bookmarked that showed the difference but I will be damned if I can find it.

Nice shooting BTW, and point well shown.

Both true... I treat my Colt and LMT's as tools, I take care of them but am not obsessed with cleaning. Bore snakes are my best friends.... Keep them wet and they will run fine.

    Good shooting.

I personally have an AK that can not stay on a 8.5x11 sheet of paper at 25yds. I bought it used from a guy walking around a gun show with it on his shoulder with a For Sale sign. I paid $150 for it 6-7 years ago. I used a gun vise and sand bags and still can not get consistant groups. I think the barrel is worn out. I have not shot it in about 5 years. I have seen some other AK's that are not quite as bad as mine but still pretty bad. 10-15" groups at 100yds does not seem all that uncommon.

I have also seen AKs shoot 4-6" groups at 100yds. (not with Wolf ammo) I have not shot the Saiga models but have heard they are some of the more accurate versions of that rifle. It looks like you got two good rifles there, congrats to you. Good luck with your class, be sure to let us know how it went.

I'm also a fan of the 27 meter zero.

I just ditched my 74 style brakes in favor of birdcages. I noticed slighly better accuracy with 5 shot groups off bag at 27 (gt 124gr). I'm not much of a shooter either, and my rifles are not nearly as nice as yours.
