    Default M1 Garand

Lets say you were looking to get an M1 Garand - what company / manufacturer would you buy and what would be a good price to pay for one.

I'd like to find a wwII erra / version with character built into it - ie dented wood, etc but still a good shooter.

I am sorta aware of the CMP but would prefer to pick one up that i don't need to wait 6 months for - plus, i'm not even sure if they still have them.

Yeah, I watched Band of Brothers again yesterday.

if you want ww2, there are only two manufactures to pick from.
springfield or winchester....and springfield made pre, during and post ww2 guns as well korean war era guns.

winchester starting making them about a year before the out break of hostilities and ceased production over the summer of '45.

best bets for a reasonibly priced gun will be a spinger.

the winchesters always bring a premium, just because of the name on the receiver.

these things also were rebuilt many times. almsot every time the guns were just stripped into piles of parts, and then re-assembled the same way.
you might get a gun that has parts from every manufacture, covering all the years of production.
much has been written on them. every part can be id'ed both with who made it and what time frame.

i like the springfields, just because of the name .

mine were all 500buck local pick ups.
but most times you can expect 6-800 to buy local.
they also are overly fond of commerical ammo. yeah they're adjustable gas plugs, but sticking with m2 spec ammo is the best bet.

    What about H&R?

Do you have any links to sites with the info you speak of for id'ing them?

I don't know diddly about Garands, but CMP is hard to beat for price. I haven't seen or heard anything that they are out, or will be out anytime soon. At least I hope not since I just ordered one a month ago.

From a collectible standpoint matched serial numbers would be preferred. And the more collectible ones are from the companies that made the least. Springfield made the most so they usually don't fetch as much money. Many seem to want the Winchester.

I'll let others that know far more then I'll ever know explain it in detail.

Hopefully CMP will still have a few 1903's left by the time they get to my order. I ordered one of each. It may be a few months before I get them but it's nice to have a working rifle that's been fully checked out and in working condition.
