Fixed or Variable Scout Scope?
I am looking to add one of the below scout scopes to my Henry Model X in .45LC and SA M1A Socom 16 in .308. These rifles are not used for hunting, just plinking at 100 yds or less. Opinions on whether to go fixed or variable magnification are appreciated.

Fixed. Simple, light and you won't need or use the magnification.
I've used the 2.5 Leupold for 30 years with confidence to 300 meters.Crusader's local #556 South Central Asia chapter

Re: Fixed or Variable Scout Scope?
I used forward mountedon Ruger frontier rifles (300 WSM and 7mm-08) with fixed power morefward mounted scout scopes. They are relics from the past in my opinion. Today a traditionally mounted LPVO (1-4 or 1-6 will do everything you want it to do. Or, a forward mounted very high quality red dot like an Aimpoint will work wonders 100 yards and in. Heck, red dots without magnification work just fine for me inside of 250 yards.

How about a fixed power prism scope?
There are two kinds of guns. Those I have acquired, and those I hope to.

Re: Fixed or Variable Scout Scope?
I've been watching this thread.
I have "ideas" ("plans" may be the wrong word) for a scout configured lever or bolt gun and I've been watching some YouTube vids about the mounts/optics.
I've never been interested in scopes before - at all - but now my eyes suck and some magnification may be in order.
Just trying to figure out what's what.
This Hi-Lux may be in my price range. LOLI called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Re: Fixed or Variable Scout Scope?
I'm kind of in the same boat. I have the M1A, Ruger Gunsite Scout, and 2 Henry's (1 original, 1 tactical) that I haven't put scopes on yet to make them true scout rifles. My eyes are bad now too and I would also like to shoot them at longer ranges than the 20-25 yrd indoor ones I go to now.
