Talking AR or AK. Pros and Cons

Honestly Guys, I'm not trying to start a fight. I'm trying to decide what to buy just in case the AWB does go thru. I have a mni 14 right now. I would like to get a rifle that may not be available if the AWB. But I do have some requirements of this weapon. Here is what I am looking for. (You guys should have a field day with this one)

I'm looking for a rifle that will see very little use (See, I'm a realist). I don't plan on putting thousands of rounds thru it. But I want a rifle that will work when I need it too.

I'm not going to be going to any matches and competing with it. So, I'm not real concerned with 1 inch groups at 300 yards. It is a self defense weapon for those Rodney King kind of nights.

I want reliablity. I'm not a gunsmith. I don't want to have to tear it apart to clean it regularly. General maintinance is expected. If the SHTF and it goes a week or two between cleanings. I want it to work. And I want it to take a beating.

Want lots of goodies. I like building a weapon that feels good in my hands. If I'm relying on it for self defense. I want it to fit me wonderfully. Also want to get some parts to keep around just in case.

Ammo needs to be common and easy to find. Want a round that will get the job done. Whatever that may be.

And of course cost. The cheaper is better is a good thing. But I don't want to buy junk either. Oh, and if one model is better, could you be specific. I don't know much about either weapon. ( I carried a 60 in the CORPS)

That should get you guys started. (Remember, before you all get to far off track. Try to cover the wants above.) God I love this site (PAFOA).

By your requirements the AK fits best....

......except for feels "good in the hands".

Very reliable, cheap ammo, doesn't need much maintainence.......go get one.

I'd also go for the AK-47.
Ammo isn't as cheap as it used to be...but it's still cheaper then many other calibers. However, availabilty appears to be spotty right now.

AK here too! The Russian weapons have been "banned" a few times now (parts count, can't import barrels, etc) but they keep finding work arounds to the retarded laws squarely aimed at them. Get one while you can.

I can not think of any better weapon (at any price) that is as utterly reliable and posses reasonable accuracy as the AK platform. I prefer the AK-74 (5.45x39) but that will be one of the first calibers to be banned (no current sporting use) so ammo is always "iffy" at best.

Hitch up an AK with a Kobra red dot sight and you have a fun and extremely effective package in your hands.

Which Model of AK is a good choice. There are a dozen variations.

Buddy, they're all good! Some will argue the fact for this one or that but in reality they are all very, very similar.

    All are reliable.

    All have reasonable accuracy.

Most parts will interchange with all.

The only "difference" is some are prettier than others or include extras like threaded muzzles, brakes, folding stocks, better feeling triggers, nicer finish/furniture etc......cosmetic differences.

    You want:

Hi capacity (double stack) magazine. Single stack AKs are for Kalifornia and are lame.

Side mount scope rail (allows quick detach mounting of various optics including the Kobra).

    7.62x39 Caliber (5.45x39 to iffy).

Other than that there is no wrong choice, really. Just pick what features or extras you want from there if you desire more. It's that simple
