When you sign up for an account you can list a person who "referred" you to the site. Then you get credit for that in your CP. Unlike rep, it does get the wimmenz.

There used to be a column on the main page that listed the top referrers, top posters, hottest threads, etc.

I thought I was losing my mind... there's nothing in the user CP that lists referrals.

Yeah, if someone signs up here, and they list you as the one who referred them, it keeps track of the number of referrals.

That's it. No cookie, no parade, just a number.
