Question Some help for a poor soul in NJ.

I was recently in Las Vegas, when I discovered that Non-Resident carry permits exist. I've been reading up on this fine website but have become really confused, sometimes I see the wording that the permit is only honored in some states if the permit holder is a resident there but how does that apply to non-resident permit holders?

I travel very often and I have never felt safer than when I kept a weapon with me at all times. (I did 2 years in Iraq, never felt safer!)

I also noticed a lot of threads around here talking about the Utah vs. Florida Non-resident permit, could anyone help me out?

Both Utah and Florida issue carry permits to out of staters. These permits are honored in a reciprocal agreement with about 30 other states. (New Jersey is NOT one of them)

To get a Florida or Utah permit, you need to have documentation of a gun safety course and be able to pass a background check (among other things like a fee and fingerprints). Being a veteran may make things easier for you.

If you have your DD214 or current military ID, you can go ahead and apply to Florida right now...and get reciprocity with these states

For Utah you MUST take a UT certified class before applying....then get reciprocity with these states

In the long run, UT is cheaper....

As of June of this year, Nevada no longer honors FL licenses because FL increased its license term from 5 to to 7 years. They no longer honor UT licenses because they do not have a live fire requirement.

The only licenses that Nevada honors now are:

Alaska, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Tennessee, West Virginia.

What does that mean, get reciprocity in those states, I have to apply for my FL or UT card and then apply to all those other states?

basically those states will honor your permit from UT or FL respectively. you still have to follow the laws of the state your in.

    Go to www.handgunlaw.us

Click on Nevada. It will show what states' licenses/permits are honored there. PA isn't on the list, and I'm not sure that any of the states listed there issue to nonresidents. The common non-resident license states (FL, VA, UT, NH) are not honored in NV. The short answer is that you're probably out of luck.

I'd take the Vegas budget and "waste it" on something else -- like a new gun or maybe a training trip to Gunsite.

Click this link it will take you to the NJ Coalition for Self Defense (NJCSD) "Right to Carry Road Show". They periodically put on events at different ranges where you show up, pay your money, and they get everything done in very little time for your FL permit. It looks like your 214 will suffice for the training requirement.

So once I have the FL card, I can just enter PA and throw on my holster? Do I need to apply for the PA LTCF to enter philly?

Yes, PA honors FL license holders.

No, reciprocity means the FL card substitutes for a PA license. And IIRC PA only issues a LTCF to people who hold a carry license from their home state which you do not.
