Default help with a black powder revolver question

hey guys, just got back from talking to an employee at cabelas and wanted some advice. just got another black powder revolver, 1858 remmington .44 cal. my favorite black powder yet. I have been putting the caps on the nipples by hand for about a month now. An employee at cabelas told me i should never do that and use a capper. any input? by hand or capper better? or does it matter?

the only issue i could see, would be when* the nipple gets deformed and you try to jam a cap that for whatever reason is extra touchy.
combine that with the cylinder not lining up with the barrel, the gun not being pointed in a safe direction and you not being ready for the thing to blow up in your hand.
but all the planets in this galaxy and the next two would need to be in reverse alignment.
i have never heard of any reason to not hand cap.

    *it is when, not if.
it's only metal, we can out think it....

I usually hand cap (not that I'm a big BP shooter only have a Remington revolver) hold gun by grips in left hand in safe direction, push caps on with right. All hands and digits are behind the cylinder.

Ditto, always did it by hand since the early 1970s, no problems whatsoever.

For the Remington, you'll need a slim capper. A Thompson Center should do the trick. Use #10 caps for your revolver.
