Default Remington Opts To Stay In NY State After Securing $80M Government Contract

Remington Arms, a gun manufacturing company, will remain in New York after landing a hefty contract with the US government.

There have been waves in the world of gun industry recently as politicians pass stricter gun control laws. Just recently, Beretta announced that they would move out of Maryland following new gun control legislation. Similarly, rumors abound that HiViz and Magpul will leave Colorado in favor of more gun friendly states.

New York certainly doesn’t top the list for pro-gun states, so there was uncertainty surrounding the fate of Remington Arms. Based in Herkimer County, Remington potentially faced legal complications after Legislature passed a law banning the sale of military-style rifles.

Remington CEOs have decided to stay in New York, however, following a meeting with Sens. James Seward, Hugh Farley and Joseph Griffo, as well as Assemblymen Marc Butler, Claudia Tenney, and Anthony Brindisi. Shortly after the meeting, Congressman Richard Hanna announced that the Pentagon would award Remington an $80 million contract to make 5,000 sniper rifles over the next decade for the US Special Operations Command.

According to reports, Remington announced plans to invest $20 million into their plant, which currently employs 1,200 people.

Reading between the lines leaves Americans with an obvious suspicion: a quid pro quo between Remington and the senators would keep everybody in the green. Remington gets a hefty contract while the senators and assemblymen could take credit for keeping jobs in New York.

Some gun owners, however, aren’t particularly thrilled about the news, arguing that Remington has turned its back on gun owners by supporting a gun control state. One commenter on the WHAM news site wrote, “I will never buy from a company that confuses 2nd amendment with 2nd class citizen. You deserve to stay in New York” and another offered to sell his recently purchased Remington rifle.

Indeed, the hypocrisy is hard to overlook. Why should Remington stay in a state that bans the rifles they’re producing? Why would state legislators want to keep gun manufacturers within state borders while promoting some of the strictest gun control laws in the country?

    Who owns Remington Arms?

Look under Additional notable transactions — by sector / Firearms.

So much for me getting an R1.

DPMS and Marlin are also owned by the same company.

    I never liked Remingtons anyway.

Now I have a real reason to avoid them.

Chrony capitalism at its finest. Guess I can scratch off the model 700 from the list of bolt guns I may buy.

Maybe a MD sen. can land a big contract for M9s. to keep Beretta.

This is worse than the crap Armalite pulled. I wont be buying anything from Remington seeing as they clearly dont get the big picture.

A factory is not a suite case you pack up and leave. That shop has probably been there for a 100 years. They have 1200 workers and acres of machinery and equipment. Who is to say the place they move to doesn't turn anti gun too?Colorado was a red state but in a couple of election cycles it turned. Besides, Remington is known for its hunting rifles, not handguns or "assault rifles" as they put it. They are not by any stretch "supporting" gun grabbers. By the same token we should move out of PA because this or that gun gets banned. Your staying here funds an anti gun sate.

You make an excellent argument. I will shortly rep you for it. However, at this critical point in our Nations history, I feel we are at a significant cross roads. I feel the literal freedom we cherish is on the ledge. Because of this feeling, any company that manufactures firearms and chooses to stay in a location via bribery, 80 million contract, over the very freedom I and my family cherish, don't deserve my money or support. They don't deserve to have their product in my safe any longer. Why? Quite simply, a company like Remington who makes mostly firearms that would be considered "Traditional", bolts and pump action long guns, accepted money to stay in a state that doesn't respect it's citizens much less the US Constitution. Remington doesn't, in my opinion, deserve the "Gun Keepers" support. By staying silent, by taking the bride, by staying put in a non-gun friendly location, they do support "Gun Takers." Their silence is support. But not only were they not silent, they have agreed to take 80 million dollars from the TAX PAYERS from across this nation. They are, to me, the same as the women who lent themselves to the Nazi's to better their lot in life while the Nazi's occupied their country. They are whores, no more, no less who have decided to side with those that lay on the side of socialism. My stomach turns with the thought that these elitist assholes truly believe the filth which pores from their mouths that restricting liberty and freedom is good. Remington has made a choice of Security over Liberty and for that, I shall sell all my Remington products and never purchase one of theirs again. There are plenty of great firearm manufactures that I can fill my safes gun slots with that hold the same or close to the same ideology of myself.

While I understand a company's decision to move or stay in a state that has laws that run counter to their product is not made lightly. Their employees would be forced to uproot and leave family and friends or look for jobs locally when the country is still in recession, I still think Remington sold out. I for one will avoid Remington products (also Marlin, a Remington owned company). I've owned a Remington 870 for over a decade and a Marlin bolt action .22 LR rifle. I may sell them.
