The tank under the stand is a 30 gallon separate tank. In the "fish" world they are called sumps. It consists of 3 chambers. the first chamber on the far left is where the water comes in from the main tank (through the black overflows seen in the pic). The middle chamber holds macro algae, live sand, live rock, and a skimmer. The middle chamber is used to filter the water basically a DIY filter for saltwater tanks. The 3rd and last chamber is to house the return pump which pumps the filtered water back up and into the tank.

Interesting to see another MFK member here! I've only got two posts on MFK, though.

Currently I have a 55 gallon African cichlid tank, and I'm preparing to purchase a 265 gallon tank for them in January.
