A Bethlehem man will spend at least a month in Northampton County Prison for stabbing a man in a fight that the assailant said he joined to help his pregnant girlfriend.

David Ramos, 19, of 631 Wyandotte St. said Friday that he got into the April 25 fight in his neighborhood after a couple of women jumped his 17-year-old girlfriend, who was five months pregnant. Their boyfriends, he said, got into the fight as he attempted to pull the women off of her.

''I told them 'If you are going to touch my girl, I'm going to hurt you,''' Ramos said at his sentencing Friday in Northampton County Court.

Ramos, who still had neck injuries from a previous accident, said that he had taken a few punches and pulled out a knife to stab the man. Once he saw blood, he said he dropped the knife and later turned himself in.



While he understood the circumstances, Northampton County Judge Emil Giordano said Ramos had to serve some time behind bars.

''You don't carry around a knife unless you intend to use it,'' Giordano said.

Luis Santana, 25, of Bethlehem required surgery at St. Luke's Hospital-Fountain Hill. He did not attend the sentencing, the guilty plea or give a victim's impact statement.

Ramos' attorney, Eric Dowdle, said he had feared Santana would attend a trial if compelled, and that's why Ramos negotiated a guilty plea of simple assault and terroristic threats. Ramos had been charged with more serious crimes, including aggravated assault.

After having a conference with Dowdle and prosecutors, Giordano agreed to also accept a withdrawal of the terroristic threats charge and sentenced Ramos to one to 23 months in prison with credit for time served.

Giordano rejected requests of house arrest and a suspended sentence.

Ramos said he plans to move with his girlfriend and baby to his uncle's farm in Lehigh County.
