LONG BEACH, Calif. — A woman wounded in an officer-involved shooting Saturday in downtown Long Beach was carrying a fake semi-automatic pistol, authorities say.

Homicide detectives identified the woman as Adeline Arroyo, 32, who remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition. The Long Beach resident was booked on suspicion of brandishing a replica firearm in the presence of a police officer.

Officers arrived at 3rd Street and Long Beach Boulevard about 9:50 a.m. Saturday, said police spokeswoman Marlene Arrona. They negotiated with Arroyo near a post office after people called the Police Department and reported seeing a woman armed with a handgun.

Police said they saw Arroyo holding an object in her right hand, but she tried to conceal it in her clothing. Mental health specialists arrived at the scene to negotiate with her, though they were unsuccessful, prompting officers to call in the SWAT team.

At one point, Arroyo started walking toward police, removing clothing covering the item in her right hand, showing what observers thought looked like a handgun, authorities said. She initially aimed it toward the postal building, then turned it toward officers.

The officers fired on Arroyo. In a video, Arroyo is seen wearing a blue-gray T-shirt, plaid pajama pants and flip-flops, authorities said. The mental health specialists tried to talk to Arroyo for more than an hour before gunshots were fired, Arrona said.

The L.A. County district attorney's office will launch an independent investigation into the shooting. This is routine in officer-involved shootings resulting in injury or death. Long Beach has had 19 such shootings this year, compared with nine in 2012.

The public is asked to call Long Beach Dets. Teryl Hubert and Mark Bigel Guarino at (562) 570-7244 with information. Anonymous tips can also be submitted by calling (800) 222-TIPS (8477) or by visiting LACrimeStoppers.org.

From what I can see it appears to be a justified shoot.

That being said, with an hour of negotiation I would think that before they got to this step it would have been more practical to use some type of less-lethal method to subdue her. Again, I was not there and am not trained on the exact steps of trying to talk someone down up to and including using lethal force. Regardless, the other methods they did attempt obviously failed, and at the exact moment that she turned the "gun" towards them they were justified in using lethal force.

Interesting to note that it appears she is hit mostly COM, and at least 10 shots were fired by my count. It put her down, but certainly not instantaneously. It almost appears that she purposely turns away and lays down. Guess the officers need to start carrying .45ACP

It seems like the gun simply comes around in the general direction of the police as she walks around in her slow-motion stupor. It doesn't look like any attempt to actually point or aim the gun at anyone. Maybe they could have waited.

Maybe an analogy would be it's like shooting someone for sweeping you rather than aiming at you.

She was obviously intent on suicide by Cop. After a long standoff, I think they were left without other options as she approached with what appeared to be a real gun.
Still a sad situation and a tough call by LEO's.

I'm usually one of the first to be bitching about trigger happy cops like in the case of the 12 year old with the toy gun in CA. but in this case I don't see where they had much of a choice at that time. Could they have hit her with a couple bean bag rounds previously? Maybe, but at the time of the shooting she was coming at them waving a gun around. Don't really see where they had much of a choice.

Less than lethal shot to the gut maybe, or a taser? Seems like the cops had plenty of time to decide. Typical.

Once the 'apparent' gun was rotated towards people (these just happened to be cops, but that doesn't matter here), all bets are off. I would have fired in that situation.

My question is what part of the CA Penal Code is "suspicion of brandishing a replica firearm in the presence of a police officer" from?

Good shoot. As soon as the gun muzzle came around toward a person, all bets are off.
Actually I commend them on their restraint and the handling of this situation.
