Juvenile Criminals Walk Free in Upper Darby

The top cop in Upper Darby, Pa. is mad as a hornet, both because of a rash of assaults and robberies by juveniles, and because the county won’t lock up some of the suspects.

Upper Darby police superintendent Michael Chitwood (above) says the attacks in late July put police on alert. It appeared that three or four groups of juveniles -- most from nearby Philadelphia -- were trolling for victims at night.

I wonder what the truth is?

Chitwood: "Two of them we had and let go and gave them back to their parents because there was no room in the detention facility. That's asinine. That's unacceptable. Make room."

Berry: The deputy director of the Delaware County juvenile detention center denies that any suspects were turned away -- or would have been.

Ronald Berry says there were eight empty beds on the night in question and even if there weren't, any juvenile suspect meeting admission criteria would be put in a cot. He says the center can't refuse a proper admission request.
