Non steal core 5.45 ammo.
Anyone know who if any sells NON steal core 5.45 ammo. (Is wolf and black bear steal)I need some for the range since I am not allowed to shoot steal core. Thanks

Well...there doesn't have to be any non steel core.
The 5.45x39 was designed as a military cartridge. The steel core is integral to the design of the bullet and a lead bullet would be much shorter and may not feed properly. There is not a plethora of 5.45 bullets on the market because it doesn't do anything better than say the 223/5.56x45 which is in fact a better all around round for this catergory. This is the main reason you don't see the commercial ammo manufacturers swarming to make 5.45x39.
Yes you can get cheap military ammo for the 5.45x39. To get this you've traded off ammunition availability (try getting it at Wal Mart or Dick's) and variety. If there's some type of import ammo ban in the future you'll find yourself with no ammo or even any boxer primed brass to reload.
Not trying to be nasty just stating the facts.

Wow didnt ask you to throw the 5.45 under the bus but thats for the reply. So all in all there is not 5.45 that is not steel core?

I believe some Romanian (all lead bullet) was imported about 10-15 yrs ago.
Perhaps someone still has some left over.

i bought 2160 rnds several months ago, dont know if its steel core or not, all i know is that the price has since doubled.
