Default MSNBC: Firearms from U.S. being used in Mexico drug violence

Firearms from U.S. being used in Mexico drug violence
Cartel leaders are hiring Americans to make the purchases for them

Mexican cartels are taking advantage of U.S. gun laws to buy thousands of weapons that are being used in an escalating drug war that has claimed more than 31,000 lives since late 2006, experts and law enforcement officials tell NBC News.

U.S. firearms agents estimate that around 80 percent of the weapons used by Mexican drug traffickers come from the United States, where cartel leaders are hiring Americans with clean records to make the purchases for them. In the past four years, Mexican authorities say they have seized 90,000 weapons from their nation's drug war.

"The cartels need their tools of the trade, which are the weapons, and they are coming to the U.S. to get those weapons," William McMahon of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told NBC News.

most of the fire arms in mexico that have come from the u.s. are probably coming from their currupt law enforcement officers. since our goverment supplies them with weapons. so I say to solve the problem we take the firearms we supply mexico with and start supplying arizona and texas residents with them instead.

yup this is true. We get the drugs, they get the guns. Security going into Mexico isnt even 1/10th as strong as coming out of mexico. They are working to change that however(supposedly).

Until they actually put forth reliable numbers I'll call it for what it is, liberal media propaganda. Yes some firearms go from private US citizens to drug cartels in mexico, but NONE of the numbers put forth so far from the liberal left about this have passed any serious analysis.

first off if private citizens were selling guns to mexico in some type of whole sale operation you don't think the atf would be on top of that? its not like these cartels are gonna be asking private citizens to be buying them 1 or 2 guns. it would be noticeable quantities. I'm pretty sure red flags would be up. but we can let the same liberals that won't allow arizona to enforce their borders dictate what's going on down there.

It's been a while since I've heard of a recent case, but private US citizens have, to my knowledge, been arrested for setting up straw-purchasing rings to send firearms across the border illegally. The number of people doing it is incredibly low, however.

I don't think we're actually disagreeing on anything here.

Lets blame the law abiding american citizen for the drug war in mexico cause they are the one's supplying the weapons, then we have an excuse to take away yet another right from them.

Yes it happens but the numbers are very small. And BTW you know when it happens who do you think does most of the straw purchasing? Are lovely freinds that came from south of the border or who have ties to people south of the border. Most of whom are, yes you guessed it "mexican".

I overheard some of this crap on the evening news tonight.

They even have a catchy phrase for it...

    "River of Steel!"

Ugh. Anything to hype it up to make it appear worse than it is.
Sounds like a bad 80's made for TV movie.
I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!
