Good Inexpensive Shotgun?
Hi all,
I am curious as to what your opinions are about some good shotguns to get without breaking the bank (I am open to buying used as well). This is going to be my first shotgun too.
I will use the shotgun for home defense and trips to the range. It will have to be pump action. Remember, for me the lower price is better as long as it functions well.
Any recommendations on a specific company or an actual model of gun to go for would be great thanks!

If you're looking at used you can find some ex-police issue shotguns that may have cosmetic issues, but function fine. I've picked up Remington 870 Wingmasters that were ex-police issue for very reasonable prices. Last was at Surplus City.

I'll second the Mossberg 500. I have a couple of them and they're good value for what you get. They also have strong aftermarket parts support, if you want to customize it for your needs. There are plenty of good options out there, but the 500 has been around a long time and has proven very reliable.

Re: Good Inexpensive Shotgun?
Mossberg 500 or Remington 870. I prefer the 870 personally. Both are dependable. Either has a plethora of aftermarket parts and barrels to choose from. Put an 18" smoothbore on for home defense. Change to a 28" smoothbore for trap. Change to a turkey barrel or a rifled barrel for slugs. The most versatile weapon you will own. They are common enough that finding a decent used one at a reasonable price will not be hard.
