    Default WTB: AK 47 preban

Hey guys. Does anyone know of any prebans (89) out there for sale? Will go as high as $1500-$1600 for NIB.

AFAIK; Your Arnco AK is a pre-ban semi "AKM".

I may get flamed, but personally; the "USA-compatible" AKs available to us today are as good as the pre-89 guns at a 3rd the price.

Why buy a $900.00+ stamped CHICOM gun when you can find a Cent Yugo on the open market for less?
Better/heavier quality US and Euro steel components, better recvr, better U/Folder set-up, and USA parts. Has bayo lugs and slant brake.

The only downside is the non-chromed Green Mtn barrel, and the single-hook trigger.

And there are the many boutique-built guns made from top-shelf USA and Euro parts sets.

And - the true Russians made from converted Saiga rifles.

The only pre-89 guns I could understand folks striving to pay long green for are PolyTech Legends, Valmets, and IMI Galils, and maybe Hungarians.
All else has since been covered with the variety of 922'd AKs avail to us.

Also, your WTB should probably be in the classifieds.

Yep ... there a number of ones out there. Your best bet is to hit gunbroker or theakforum.net

as nfafan said, functionality wise there isn't a whole a lot of difference between the pre and post ban guns, but some people do value the pre-bans because they are 100% foreign made and don't have to worry about 922(r).

If your looking for a shooter, I would go with post-ban. If your looking for something more as a "Collector", then buy the pre-ban.

If your more specific on what type of pre-ban your looking for people will be able to help you out better.

Best option if you want a shooter and not a collection piece - locate a post-ban Norinco MAK-90, then convert to 922r compliance, using a new furniture set, gas piston and FCG.

You'll be getting a rifle with a thick, durable receiver and a chrome-lined barrel. It will take the worst you can give it, like any other AK, though it might not be as collectible as a pre-ban.

Tapco makes the gas piston and the FCG. K-Var has good synthetic furniture sets, but some really nice compliance wood furniture sets are made by Ironwood Design.
These are the exalted gharāniq, whose intercession is hoped for. LMAO

Just sold a Poly Legend for 2500... You will have to spend more for a milled pre-ban. Just de-ban a milled Norinco and save the cash!

Yep ... +1. If I bought a milled mak90 or slant cut stamped one, I would turn it into an underfolder and de-ban it. Straight cut, would get chicom stock set and a spiker FSB.

Tanners has a nice Norinco side folder in stock as of last saturday. The rifle looks pretty decent but i think it's a bit over priced at 1200. unless there's some reason you absolutely have to have a preban there are plenty of post 2004 AK out there that are just as good or better than any preban.

It is likely that the cult era of the pre-ban AK-47 type rifles has mostly passed. As said by the OP, there are so many perhaps "better" quality editions floating around now that to pay through the nose for some old Norinco or Maadi AK doesn't make much sense. Unless a person has some odd prototype or limited import version, the collector market for these things is quite small.

If you think about it, the essential design of the Kalashnikov as a simple and highly reliable combat weapon for the masses precludes it by nature as an elitist collector's item. The ubiquitousness of the AK has expanded is recent years with dozens of manufacturers producing semi-auto versions for the civilian market. Right now, the used and new markets are flooded with a wide availability of quality American made editions of the AK. Add into the mix the expanding economic depression (notice that I didn't use the pussy term of recession) and mucho bargains can be had for anybody with a few bucks left in his pocket.

Go get them good cheap AKs kids!
