    Default M1 Garand ammo question

I'm looking for M-2 ball 30-06 ammo for my M1 Garand, is there any place besides CMP that sells bulk ammo.
Also what is the best CMP ammo for good groups at 100 and 200 yards I ordered 250 rounds of the Lake City and am waiting for arrival. I have been using expensive 150 grain FMJ American Eagle and holding very good grouping. I know the surplus ammo wont compare but any help in this matter will be greatly appreaciated.

mil surp ammo is not going to be as accurate as your production ammo.
That being said, I get decent grouping from the HXP on the CMP site. If you are really looking for accuracy, you are going to have to load your own. The M1 is my favorite rifle, but a tack driver she is not.

    ALSO

You may want to think twice about putting new production ammo through your M1. They were designed for ball powder, which has a slower burn rate than most modern powders. You could do damage if you keep running hotter ammo through your rifle than what it was designed for.
"The rifle is the weapon of democracy. If guns are outlawed, only the government will have guns. Only the police, the secret police, the military. The hired servants of our rulers. Only the government-and a few outlaws. I intend to be among the outlaws." (Edward Abbey, "The Right to Arms," Abbey's Road [New York, 1979])
I have my rifle. Do you?

I'll emphatically second to be very careful using modern '06 ammo in a Garand. It is hotter and can damage the rifle. CMP also cautions about using modern ammo. I have HXP from CMP and it shoots plenty good and when I get some brass built up I'll dig up the GI ammo specs and start loading my own. I'd hate to tear up my Garand.

although i would not recomend it, adjustable gas cylinder locks allow the use of modern ammo, without fear of trashing an op rod.

    Mikepro8,
Sorry to disagree. Most .30-06 service loads were/are not ball powder. IMR/H4895 are the most commonly used powders. Neither one are ball. IMR 4064 is another extruded powder highly recommended for the M1 Garand.. IMR 4895 is the powder 99.9% of all US GI loads are loaded with. The important thing is the burning speed of the powder, not if it is ball, extruded, or flake. If you check the burning rate tables you will notice that all of these powders are in the same burn rate family.
    The following approximate Ball M2 ballistics;
    150 gr. FMJ
    46. grain-48 grains IMR/H4895
    46gr.-48grs. 2015BR
    46grs.-48 grs. IMR 4064
    46grs.-48grs. RL-12
The following approximate M72 Match ballistics
    168-180 gr. FMJ
    44-47 grs. IMR/H4895
    43-45.5 grs. 2015BR
    46-50 grs. IMR 4064
    46-50 grs. 2495BR
    46-50 grs. W748
These are all loads for the M1 Garand.
