CHICAGO - March 7, 2014 (WPVI) -- A woman working at a Chicago thrift store is dead after a gun hidden in donated clothing fell out of a sock and went off.

According to ABC affiliate WLS-TV in Chicago, officials said the woman's co-worker shook out a sock that had been dropped off as a donation around 9:45 a.m. Friday in the backroom of the thrift store in the 9400-block of South Ashland Avenue.

A gun fell out, police said, and discharged when it hit the floor.

A 54-year-old woman was fatally struck by a bullet in the chest.

The victim has not been identified.

Odds are, that isn't what happened. Given the safety features in most guns, and the fact that she was hit in the chest, I'll bet the co-worker assumed it was a toy gun and pulled the trigger.

Good point. She probably pointed it at her coworker, said "bang, you're dead"and it went off. Too many clueless sheep out there, responsibility for their own actions is foreign to them.

Yep, it is very rare for a gun to fall, and go off by itself. Very rare. I hope the truth comes out, and the other person is held accountable, IF that is the case.

I think that the woman was most likely murdered unless she corroborated the story before she died.

Not having access to any of the info beyond the story.

There are a lot of cheap guns (Phoenix, Raven, Jennings etc) that don't have any sort of firing pin block that definitely CAN go off when dropped. The fact that the gun was inside a sock and was forgotten further leads me to believe that it is possibly one of these super-low-end models.

I still don't think that's how it happened, but it is possible.
