Re: prepared horse radish
Brian, it's always good to check the expiration dates on the store-bought stuff. It does lose it's "spunk" after a month in the jar. Want some good stuff? Buy the horseradish roots at the farm market and grind your own. All you need is a blender or a food processor.Save the tops and plant them in your garden and you'll have your own crop going. Peel the skin off with a potato peeler and cut into pieces. Put it in the blender with crushed ice or really cold icewater just enough to make it a little juicy. The coldness helps to keep it white. Put it in a strainer to drain and put it in a jar with a little white vinegar and refrigerate. Some people will add a pinch or two of sugar also.
P.S. During the process the household will probably evacuate. =)
Use plenty of ventilation.
PlinkerMy dog "Ruger" is worried about the economy because Alpo is up to $3.00 a can. That's almost $21.00 in dog money.

Re: prepared horse radish
People love it at work. We serve roast beef, and a lot of people get it. One day a guy came in and wanted the real stuff cuz his buddy dared him to slug a dish of it. He did, his face was red, his eyes were watering...

Re: prepared horse radish
This is so funny. Dalton and I where talking about horse radish last night and if we should try to grow it next year. Seems pretty easy to grow and if you let it grow till the first frost, that's when it's at it's strongest.
We also looked into wasabi, most stuff sold in the USA is dyed horse radish, the real stuff is really hard to grow.
