Default Bushnell airgun scope on my .223?

Hey guys i know its a stupid question but i just picked up this scope at Gander Mountain on sale its a 3-9x32 the box says airgun/ rifle scope, its got an adjustable objective and sweet target turrets on it and truthfully its nice and compact just what i wanted for my ground hog huntin rig, so i was creaming over this deal till i got hme and saw the part about the airgun on the box. i called bushnell and after holding 15 mins i really didnt get a definitive answer from an obviously confused lady. what do you guys think should i mount it and try it out or take it back and get my $ back? Thanks Denny

If I paid what I consider is very little money for it, I'd go ahead and stick it on there. If you don't mind eating the cost, it won't hurt to try it. Only thing you can waste is a little time and a little money.

I can't speculate on a regular rifle and an airgun scope, but I do know an Airgun will destroy a regular riflescope. An airgun recoils forward, instead of backwards....

On something like a 223 you won't have any problem but I wouldn't put it on a 7mm Mag. As others have said, the recoil impulse from an airgun is forward instead of back. The piston operation on an airgun is what reverses the recoil. One thing I always found funny is that a good airgun scope will hold up fine on a bolt action 50bmg when a std low end rifle scope craps out in the first couple shots but it is for the same reason a std. rifle scope goes TU on an airgun. The muzzle break on a 50 pulls the rifle forward so the recoil impulse is more of a pull then a push.

That must be why the lens went flying out of the $90 BSA PMRS red dot I put on the AK when I first got it. The first thing I added was a break so I could fire as rapidly as I wanted and stay on target. 8 shots later the dot was jumping all over in the pane, then the pane wasn't there..! I returned it and the AK has stayed irons since.

I also have a PWS break on my .223 AR and I don't think it could break a sight if its life depended on it. There is no recoil. It barely moves. I would just try it.

    Former Air gun nut here

Springers actually recoil in both directions and will kill a $$$ rifle scope quick. Airgun scopes are built much more stoutly than most rifle scopes and should hold up to rifle use just fine.

Shouldn't be a problem at all. Let us know how it works out for you.
