Sounds like you need a safe. You're in a tough spot, if you press charges he will likely have a record for the rest of his life, if you don't he doesn't learn anything. I think I'm in the beat his ass camp. If he presses assault charges you press theft charges.

Yeah, you can't kick his ass - sounds like he's in "I'm a little punk ass bitch" mode and needs to grow up. If he stole a handgun from you, and your MOM'S WEDDING RING (what a f'ing creep!), then yeah, he'd press charges against you if you laid a hand of him.

What's the statue of limitation for stealing a handgun? Probably you've got time - tell him he's got 2 strikes, anything else happens and strike 3 you press charges for the stolen handgun.

God, I'd force him to move out right now or else I would call the cops and press charges. You cannot live with him. Maybe you should move out.

I would press charges. A thief will always be a thief. You can't control what your mother does about her ring, but you can control a crime against you. The fact that he took it and put it on your bed and admitted to putting it on your bed, says a lot...

From someone that has 302'd a family member twice, also a bad news brother, I can honestly say if you show them you mean business from the get-go they won't mess around with the family. Your job is to protect yourself and your family, even if that means protecting them from another family member. It sucks, but he isn't thinking of the consequences to his actions and thinks the family won't do anything because he is family.

If it's his first offense, he won't be beaten up too badly by the legal system, but he will carry a record for the rest of his life. The good side of that, is he would likely become a prohibited person, which blows his chance of buying a legal firearm out of the water. If he is ever caught with a firearm, it's another felony on top of what he was caught doing in the first place.

Thats what I told my mother (my dad is gone). After something like this he has to been gone. Except my mother can't follow through on it hopefully with what happened with the gun she'll come to her senses.

I'd whoop that ass and tell him if he presses charges, then I'm pressing charges for the stolen handgun.
