The Best Reason Ever for your carry application!
I was working about 15 years ago when a local volunteer fireman approached me.
He wanted to know how to go about getting a CCW in PA.
I explained the process in general terms, and then I said kind of generically 'What do you need a pistol permit for?".
Let me explain that last bit. You see, the local sherrif's dept was putting things like "collection" and "Hunting" on their "reason checklist" and using both of them to exclude. You don't need a CCW for either, and they were doing a bit of underhanded dealing there to deny people. I always told people "look them right in the eye and tell them "SELF DEFENSE"...but i digress.
Anyway, I asked him why he needed a permit and he said :
"To protect me from the aliens".
No shit.
I did a double take and said "What?".
He repeated it.
Now I am sure I have a bull goose loony on my hands and asked him if he thought that aliens were really a threat, and was he fearing abduction.
Nope.
It turns out that he worked in a job that had a LOT of *you may now have guessed it* ILLEGAL ALIENS...LOL
My God he sounded like an absolute lunatic, and of course it didn't occurr to him then (or probably even now) how insane he sounded. He didn't even try to explain until I prompted him.
I want you to know what incredible strength it took to not send him straight over to the Sherrif's deptartment with that answer ready to go..
My sherrif used to have an armed officer verbally asking "why do you want a permit?" prior to even handing out an application.
The mental image of that guy, walking in there and asking for a permit "To protect me from the aliens' which then sets off a chain reaction that would probably end up in a melee involving straight jackets and officers leaping the counter....
It was SOOOOooo tempting.
My department's staff used to laugh until we cried over that one..

Re: The Best Reason Ever for your carry application!
Lancaster County has "self defense" listed as an option for "reason". They also list target shooting, hunting, and gun collecting. Anyone know if Lancaster denies applications marked for anything other than self-defense?
Good advice about always, and only, selecting "self defense" as the reason.

I wear mine for the inevitable zombie hoards rampant upon the earth during the final days......
Oh yeah, and sometimes I may need to protect myself from the living.

I've always thought, "Because I can" is sufficient.
