Ammo price gouging
So I was kinda living under a rock for the past few months. When I came out of hibernation, I noticed that the most common calibers were either out of stock with no date in sight for being restocked OR I had to literally pay 3 times the normal price.
So I bought some over priced ammo because I wasnt sure about this whole ammo shortage, and if it was real.
I a box of ammo for $69 online from a store down south.
A few days later, I found the same exact caliber ammo, same number of bullets, for $18 at a local gun store. ( It was 3.8 times cheaper)
What's going on? Why such a discrepancy in the prices?
Your thoughts?
Thx

Re: Ammo price gouging
If you could sell for 3x instead of x, why wouldn't you?
You were willing to buy for 3x. Why would I sell it to you for less?

Re: Ammo price gouging
As long as people will be willing to pay the gouged prices, the gouged prices will remain. "Cheaper than Dirt" is notorious for gouging and they are doing it again.

Re: Ammo price gouging
Two reasons:
1. When it's ALL the dealers - it's a supply/demand shortage issue - not gouging.
2. LGS not aware of the market conditions now - sold it for old tags still on the boxes.

Re: Ammo price gouging
Let me assure you that the LGS did not sell you a box of ammo that they recently acquired. Market forces have driven prices way up and no business can afford to sell an item for less than they paid and expect to stay solvent for long. Supply and demand dictate pricing.

Re: Ammo price gouging
The local gun stores I go to did not inflate their ammo prices much, maybe $2-3 a box max while they still had some (most is gone now). Larger dealers get their ammo from distributors that aren't going to jack up the price either. When the ammo order does come in it will be sold at close to regular prices. Reputable businesses don't gouge and are looking at their long term customer base, not making a quick buck short term.

Re: Ammo price gouging
Online ammo is going to carry a huge premium because it's much more accessible than a local store. Most small shops don't have online departments and in major cities ammo can't be found. Unless you want to take a day trip driving around looking for ammo most people in bigger cities will just pay more online to get it shipped to their house.

High ammo prices exist because you bought the high priced ammo.

Two LGS are buying from their distributor brass cased 9mm at $25 a box of 50. They are selling it for $29 a box. That's hardly "price gouging" and they sell every box they get in.
