Gov. Rendell To Veto Lawmakers' Budget Agreement
State lawmakers reach spending plan compromise, but Gov. Rendell not on board
Pennsylvania's lawmakers outlined their plan to end the state's budget stalemate at a news conference this morning in Harrisburg.
It was an agreement in principle and the details still had to be worked out over the next few weeks.
However, KDKA Political Editor Jon Delano reports that Gov. Ed Rendell says he plans to veto the budget.
In a significant development, Republican leaders of the Senate reached a compromise with the Democratic leaders of the House.
It called for a total budget of $27.945 billion in spending with no broad-based tax increases.
However, to pay for some of the spending, there would have to be higher business taxes, a 25 cent increase in the cigarette tax and the legalization of poker and other table games at the state's slots casinos.
House Speaker Rep. Keith McCall apologized for the 73 day delay in the agreement.
"We have been in communication with the Governor's Office. As we draft the legislation and do the line by line analysis of the budget, his staff will be involved in that," said Rep. McCall. "He asked for $300 million in education, that was his primary ask. He asked for at least $1.1 billion in recurring revenues and that is in this request. So as far as we are concerned, we have met those parameters."
In addition to Rendell, Republican House leaders were also not part of the compromise.

Please excuse my ignorance to the subject. But are state workers still not getting paid until a new budget is approved?

Re: Fat Eddie promises to veto budget
I actually don't have a problem with the veto.
Overall, the 2010 budget is slated to be smaller than the 2009 budget, but this "compromise" includes MORE taxes on cigs and MORE taxes on businesses!

Re: Fat Eddie promises to veto budget
I'd veto anything with any tax increase on business or citizens as well.

Actually, he promised to veto because it doesn't have his TEMPORARY income tax increase included.

Re: Fat Eddie promises to veto budget
As well he should veto it. Not that I think it's because of why I think it should be struck down. If taxing the people in a recession is stupid, then why do these idiots think taxing business is a good idea? Great, our taxes won't go up, but we won't have a job anymore either. Frickin morons.....
