Default Need Advise on Installing a Router

So my SO wants her own computer
I need advise on hooking up a wired router.

We have a DSL connection. Can I buy a cheapish router ($50 or so) that will function well? I am using a Westell 6100 modem. It is my understanding that I need to set up the modem to bridge to the router. Will the router slow the connection speed? When both systems ar online how does the bandwidth split?
Do I need anything other than a router, basic netwok card (I already have one in my computer), and networking cables?

I had a hard time trying to get my router working off of a modem...I ended up upgrading my modem from Verizon. I went wireless, but it still has a 4 port wired router built in. It only costed $70 and they split that into 3 payments on my phone bill! Now my modem, wireless and router are all in 1 unit! Much easier to maintain...

Shouldnt need anything else. I have a Linksys wireless (or wired, if you want to) router for over 5 years now, still going strong.

Its really easy. The only other thing you MAY need is a wireless card/adapter for her computer. But, if you hard wire it with CAT-5 cable, its easy peasy.
    No fear.

The router should come with instructions to hook it up. Follow them, you will be okay.

You shouldnt notice much difference in bandwidth... if you are you are running some mighty programs or going through a huge firewall. The only time I ever heard of slowing down - my brother and his fiance share an internet connection... when she is online taking classes or whatnot, his slows down. But for browsing and hanging out on PAFOA, you shouldnt have any problems.

    What's your current setup?
Do you already have one computer that is connected to the Internet?
If so, does it connect with Ethernet CAT5 cable (pic below)?

Get a 4 port router (don't power on yet)
Disconnect your computer from DSL modem and power off
    Power off DSL modem
Unpack your new router and connect everything but the power
    - DSL network cable that WAS going to your computer now goes to the WAN port/DSL port on the router. (router and cable modem still not powered on)
    - Connect network cable from port 1 on router to main computer
    - Connect network cable from port 2 on router to 2nd computer
    Power on DSL modem
    Power on router
Once all the lights are on on the router, power on both PC's
They should be now getting an IP address from your router

Barring any issues you should be done

One other thing.... If you currently connect from your computer directly to your DSL modem via CAT5 cable, then you probably don't need a full-blown router to connect another computer; you just need an Ethernet hub/switch (about $25).

If just one machine is actively using the network, then your connection speed should be unaffected by a decent 100 Mb/s switch/hub. If both are active, then the bandwidth would generally be split fairly evenly between them.

Yes that appears to be my setup.

    Like this?

    The Ethernet Hub Option
I also learned that because my Westell 6100 is already a router, then instead of buying an expensive multi-port router to replace it, I could choose to keep using the 6100, and buy an inexpensive ethernet hub that would add multiple computer ports to it. But when I shopped around for a hub locally, the cheapest one I found one would have cost $30, plus an additional $15 for two additional Cat 5e cables, bringing the total cost of that solution to at least $45. Just like the more-expensive modem/router option, the hub would have allowed me to connect up to four computers to the Internet simultaneously.

I have a wireless setup here at my house since my fiancee and I have laptops with wireless capability and my main computer is upstairs whereas the cable modem is in the living room.

The router is a Linksys WRT150-N and I use a Wireless USB network adapter up here with my PC...its a Linksys WUSB300N.

My fiancees laptop has a built in wireless card but my old clunker laptop has a USB dongle for accessing the network.
