    Default primers

I was talking to a friend and he said that he was told that one of the reasons that there is such a primer shortage is because there is a new type of primer that has a "shelf life", meaning that the explosive in the primer will become inactive over a period of time. Has anyone heard of such a thing or could this be gibberish?

That was my suggestion to my friend. Since I didn't see it here I had to imagine it was nonsense.

I don't think the shortage has a thing to do with "new type primers". However, I have heard that there have been powders developed with short shelf life. The technology to develope such a product is not far-fetched.

For those too young to remember this rumor is left over from the Klinton era. After the enactment of the AWB the next step was supposed to be short life primers. Talked to a production engineer for Winchester at that time and he said it would not happen.
Periorically the story goes around again.
