Default First gun-law flip flop? Long Island senator says SAFE Act a “mistake”

A Long Island Republican says his vote in favor of New York’s new gun-control law was a “mistake” and is now co-sponsoring a bill to repeal it.

Freshman Sen. Phil Boyle, R-Suffolk County, issued a news release on Friday detailing his change of heart, criticizing the way the bill was rushed through the Legislature. The new law—known as the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act, or SAFE Act—violates the Second Amendment, Boyle claims.

    From Boyle’s statement:

“The so-called SAFE act was a mistake. Its passage lacked transparency and public input and its wording was ill-conceived and of questionable legality

Perhaps this AHole realizes he may not get reelected and is now "seeing the light"?

If he knows that now, he most likely knew it then, too. He is backtracking now based on the public outcry, and on some of the idiotic measures in the law.

Yep. Hard to imagine he changed 180 degrees in such a short time. They simply did not see the push back coming.

If you voted for it, there's no coming back from that. I hope NY, and by extention, we in our state with our own reps, remember that.

No doubt that he is just being a politician...however at this point at least it's a small step in the right direction.

I wouldn't crucify the guy. A politician who admits he was wrong and co-sponsors a bill to fix it, that's rare... gotta give him some credit. Not a lot, but some.

Give him credit for what looking out for his own hide for the next election instead of his constituency?

He deserves no credit. He made his choice and he is now the enemy.

No, but at the same time publicly crucifying him won't do anything to help make other politicians make the same move.

Remember things like this when you cast your vote, but remember the goal.
