Suspect shot with own gun in Braddock (Allegheny County) robbery attempt
    By Jim McKinnon, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A robbery suspect is hospitalized under guard while awaiting arraignment on charges that he tried to rob a market in Braddock yesterday.

Allegheny County police said the suspect, Royal Griffith, instead became the prey when he was wounded by his own pistol.

Mr. Griffith had been floating in and out of Al's Market on Braddock Avenue yesterday before he brandished the handgun and walked behind the counter.

He pointed the weapon at the owner, but when he announced his intentions the owner fought back.

During their struggle, the gun discharged, with a bullet striking Mr. Griffith in the arm.

He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian where he was in fair condition today.

He is expected to be arraigned later today on charges of robbery and aggravated assault, county police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said.

I wonder if he could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon since he was the cause of getting himself shot. Now that would be irony.

actually, he could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon as soon as he pointed the gun at the store owner (assault does not require an actual attack, just the threat of one).

i agree with your idea, though. it would be ironic and hilarious if he were charged with something additional because he got himself shot.
