    Default HELP please..Remington 510 .22

i picked up a .22 rifle yesterday (my first one), its a Remington 510. its a bolt action and it is in decent shape for its age i guess...well I want to refinish the rifle, im already working on the walnut stock. The barrel and action are stainless steel, i would like to make it nice and shiny..HOW do i do that? progressively finer grit paper/steel wool? And if i do this, would the action and barrel be prone to rust even quicker?

its all fully disassembled and being cleaned with some clp stuff...thank you for any help!

The Remington 510 was introduced in 1939. it is not and never was made of stainless steel. It is nickel steel. To obtain a high polish you need to use progressively finer grades of abrasives. However, if you do this the stell will be very prone to rust and quite rapidly at that.

Is it showing any rust? If so, use some 0000 steel wool with oil on and lightly work those areas until the rust is gone, you might have some pits but you can't get rid of them without even move work. Then just keep it rubbed down with something like CLP after you clean it after use. If no rust on gun, shoot it, clean it and rub it down good as above and store in a dry area.
