I took a rock to the windshield on I-81
I'm still fuming over this. I was drivin along, minding the road, and it's people. Next this I know, BOOM, golf ball sized piece of something goes right into my windshield. It caused a bit of a spiral crack formation. Never saw anything like it. Pics below. Gonna cost me $100 through my insurance. This is the first major anything on my car, and I'm pretty angry. Everyone keeps telling me that I will have a leaky windshield, and that it will never seem the same. PISSED. As far as where this object came from I have no clue, seemed to be traveling at 0 mph. It's like I came up on it at about 70-75 mph, my speed. It seems as if it was thrown from the center grassy area.
You can see in the center is where it hit, and then about two inches around that is where the crack starts. The plastic on the windshield was never breached. Just an unlucky day
This is what my pretty car should look like:

Re: I took a rock to the winshield on I-81
well i guess you could say it was a lucky day that the rock didnt shatter your windshield and cause you to crash into something/someone while you were driving "70-75mph".
save the replacement receipt, if the windshield leaks take it back each time and have them replace/repair it at their own cost.

Re: I took a rock to the winshield on I-81
If installed correctly, there should be no leakage or problems what so ever.
Stay clear of the guys who do it in your driveway.
I also try to stay away from the so called insurance company recommended glass company. They usually are under some type of contract with the insurance company to offer them discounts which usually means cheaper products to keep their profit margin.
More info here : http://www.pctg.org or http://www.stopsteering.com
One thing to remember is that your windshield is the backing plate for the passenger's side air bag. Make sure that the urethane adhesive is properly cured before operating your vehicle. If not, upon a front end collision, the windshield could actually be blown off the car rendering that air bag useless.

They offered their "preffered glass company", but I opted for the cindy row near my house.

Re: I took a rock to the winshield on I-81
I had to replace my windshield a year or so back myself. Someone threw what I presume was a beer bottle at my windshield as they drove past in the opposite lane. Made a nice round indentation, but didn't penetrate it fortunately. I didn't have glass coverage so that was like 200-300 for a new windshield
. I think it bothered me more that some random asshole would just toss things at passing cars.

Re: I took a rock to the winshield on I-81
I have had 7 windshields replaced through the years, the 2 were done just in the past 3 years... by the ins co's recommended garage.
None of them ever leaked or gave me any kind of trouble.
As someone has already said, just follow the instructions for the cure period, you'll be fine.
These ass-hats who warned you "it'll leak"... I wonder what their suggested course of action should be? Leave it cracked? Brilliant.
Yup. Replacing a windshield. Now THERE is some freakin rocket surgery fer sure. :rollseyes:While many claim to support the right, precious few support the practice.

Re: I took a rock to the winshield on I-81
Almost every car I've driven in the past 10 years has had a windshield cracked. Cops need to crack down on these MFers.
I am no windshield expert (except for paying for them) but I have been told that you should not slam your doors or drive with open windows for 48 hours after a windshield replacement. The pressure can push your windshield out slightly while the compound is still curing and cause leaks later. So I have been told.
