    Default Suppressed Shotgun?

Watched "No Country for Old Men". Now I am not one to believe Hollywood is a source of competent information, but, in this movie, the one character uses a suppressed shotgun. A Remington 1100 I think.

My question is how effective would this be. I would imagine that the life of the can would be reduced due to the fact of the pollutants in the shotguns discharge, but do you think it could be pulled off?

    Just some of your thoughts.

    Be safe.

I knew what movie you just watched before I even clicked on the thread.

    From http://www.guns.connect.fi/rs/rifles.html
"The limitations with suppressing shotguns are: 1 - With standard supersonic ammo the flight noise of shot is so high, that the suppressed noise is only 5 - 6 dB lower than as unsuppressed. If one gets or can load subsonic ammo, the noise reduction is quite enough for effective hearing protection. 2 - Only single barrel shotguns can be suppressed with reasonable amount of work. 3 - Suppressor affects balance and sight line of the shotgun."

A big factor in suppressing any type of firearm is getting ammo that shoots less than the speed of sound - which is 1050-1150 fps or so depending on altitude.

The next biggest factor is muffling the explosive noise - given a big enough can to allow expansion in and proper designing, even howitzers can be suppressed.
