AR Cleaning question
I cleaned my AR today after shooting about 300 rounds throught it the other day(guatemalan surplus). This was the second time i cleaned it. I notice a good bit of build up on the back edge of the bolt. Around the rim like a engine valve. There was also buildup inside the bolt carrier where this part seats. Is this a comon place to have this type of build up and what is the best way to get it off? Also was this my fault for not lubricating the bolt enough? I am now realy regretting not cleaning it right after shooting it sunday night...

Re: AR Cleaning question
Normal fouling.
Scrape it off with an old casing or a sharp edge. I polish mine with 1000-2000 grit paper from Auto Zone and that helps keep it down.
I taught Chuck Norris to bump-fire.

Re: AR Cleaning question
Okay I'm back, and I have calmed down.
What you speak of is normal. That buildup can be removed with a nice brush, some solvent, and if it's really hardcore some dental picks.
Yes, cleaning it right after shooting would have helped but it shouldn't be that difficult to get off.
We used to drop our bolts in a pan full of solvent back in my military days... let them sit for 20 min or so then get on it with the brush. Should come off fairly easily. I'm going to bet that your firing pin is pretty gunked up by now too...
Anyway, just clean it and you will be good to go.
Don't overdo it with the CLP on the bolt either - it'll just spread the mess.
Hope this helps. Go clean your rifle now.

Re: AR Cleaning question
I start cleaning my AR by pulling the upper off, pulling the discharge handle and bolt out, pulling the firing pin, pin, then dropping the pin into a cup of kerosene. I pull the key out, pull it apart and drop both pieces into the cup as well. I let them soak as I spray WD-40 down the gas tube, then clean the barrel, around the gas tube, and the lower. I then pull the parts out of the can with needle nose pliers and they seem to wipe down very easily since the kerosene breaks things down very well. I use some small brushes or a pipe cleaner to get some of the hard to reach areas.

Re: AR Cleaning question
Yup yup! Get those uber-long pipe cleaners for your gas tube, they come in handy.
Brushes, rags, picks, and patience are all mandatory. I actually like cleaning my AR. Nice to spend some quality time with her before I abuse her again.
Ahhh....... love.

Re: AR Cleaning question
Those long pipe cleaners are a waste of time. The pressure and temperature of the gas that is going through the gas tube will not allow major build up of gunk. Every time you fire the tube is blown clean only leaving a little dust behind. You are actually better off spending that time paying extra attention to the bolt assy and breach cleaning.
If you feel you must clean the tube a good spray of cleaner down the tube will do more than the pipe cleaners ever could.
