Target Shooting
Where is it legal to target shoot in PA? There are woods directly behind my house that is frequented by hunters. I do not hunt, but enjoy target shooting. We have walked back and target shot on several occasions. We are quite a distance from any homes and there are no residences in the direction we shoot. Is this legal, or do we need to go to a gun range? One time we were questioned by a township police officer and he stated we were fine because we had a proper backstop. We shoot in a clear area that is against a steep hill. The land is not posted, and I do not want to do anything illegal. During hunting season, we often hear the rifle shots from our home.
Thank you

Re: Target Shooting
you still might want to check with your local laws and try to find who owns the land you might be trespassing on.

Re: Target Shooting
If you're not tresspassing, and there are no local ordinances, and there is a proper backstop. I think you're OK.
If "the law" tells you it's cool I think you should be fine.
Provided you're not tresspassing

Re: Target Shooting
I agree, check the county courthouse and see who the owner of record is on the property. The clerks are usually helpful if it is your first time on the computers there. Or, if lucky, some info may be available online.

Re: Target Shooting
IIRC, townships can pass ordinances on discharging weapons in city limits. Check up on that. Seems you have no neighbors to file noise complaints, so thats all I can really think of you'd have to sweat. But, you a seemingly gun friendly PD so I doubt that'd even be a problem.
Sure sounds like you'd be okay by my reading.
Edit: If its not on city limits, the discharge ordinance might not even go there. Is the land yours?Last edited by jsb889; February 26th, 2008 at 12:23 AM.

Re: Target Shooting
I do not own the land, and it is not in the city limits. It is in the township. Hunters park at the end of the dead end road I live on (about 100 feet from my property) and walk through a field to the wooded area.
Thank you for the replies.
