If you already own it, sure, why not? Use 38 SPL +P personal defense ammo, that should work just fine.

Re: Model 10 S&W 4 inch barrel 38 special
Model 10's have a long service history for defense. When I got one the consensus was any gun stamped with a model number is ok for +P. Open the cylinder and look at the frame and you'll see Mod10-(model#).
FWIW some of the standard reloaded .38 special loads we used a few decades ago are now considered +P. Couldn't guess at how many it's consumed.
I carry it when working around the place. Suggest good belt and holster as it has some heft to it.Last edited by cephas; March 28th, 2018 at 12:04 PM.
It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to.

Absolutely. Some of us even like 38 snubbies.

Nothing wrong at all with the model 10 or 38 Special in my opinion. Both are solid proven designs for self defense. With modern ammo, there's not a whole lot of difference in effectiveness of most similar pistol calibers, so if you're comfortable with it go for it.

I'm a big fan of classic S&W revolvers, but that might be a beast to carry concealed. If it's what you own, great .... but consider turning it into a house gun if you can eventually pick up something smaller.

The Model 10 is fine revolver and the base for many PPC and "race revolvers" the newer heavy barrel types are no problem with +P loads though your regular practice should be with standard loads. FWIW I'd stick with 158 gr bullets regardless of bullet profile (unless you. go for something like Lehigh Valley cartridges). I had no luck with 125 gr handloads. If you can get or handload the equivalent to the old FBI .38 Spec load you'd be very well served. 158 gr lead hollow point at about 900 fps at the muzzle, will certainly make a miscreant say "ouch"! BTW since we're talking revolvers, be sure to learn the correct way to use speedloaders or if concealability is your main concern the correct use of the "Bianchi speed strips". FWIW I prefer the Safariland Comp II or III Speedloaders to the HK jobs, though under some conditions the HKs might be sturdier.
