Bush put tariffs on steel imports and the Chinese did nothing. It is all bluffing they need us far more than we need them. They have to create 25 million jobs every year to keep the masses content. Problem is they are not even coming close to that 25 million jobs in this economy. If we get into a trade war they are going to be the ones holding the short straw as they say.

The only reason we are selling so many cars in China is the Chinese government has a 50% subsidy on automobiles. That $35K Buick Lucerne is MSRPed at $17,500 in China. They are in a race for their own economic survival. Without the rest of world buying their goods their economy implodes. They need to create a middle class that will have the wealth to purchase all those goods they are selling to the rest of the world.

No middle class no economy to keep the peasants working in those factories working. No work means millions of really pissed off Chinese citizens.

I don't like Obama and I think he is totally out of his league being President but in this situation he did what he thinks is right and I'll hold my opinion until I see what happens down the road. I'll bet you if McCain was president he would have done the exact same thing.

Obama's political inclination - pleasing the unions - coupled with the fact that the guy has no economic fiber in his body makes it almost guaranteed that he will do stuff like this over and over again.
