    Default Police and 45`s

Article in the paper says Easton PD is switching to 45`s. The interesting part was the article says Whitehall (Lehigh County) carries Colt 1911`s. That`s freak`in awesome. Wonder if they carry locked and loaded?

Monday's story also quoted Sgt. Ribello Bertoni of the Whitehall Township police as saying officers there switched to .45-caliber guns about 15 years ago.

Since that is my favorite police force (I live in Whitehall) and I know Bertoni, I asked him about that.

''We carry the Colt 1911,'' he said. ''I think it's the same basic design'' as John Browning's original. ''We went to them for their better knockdown power.''

I never even knew the cops in my town have been protecting us with 1911 weapons. There's another reason to get sentimental!

Cool...I saw one of our local LEO's sporting a stainless 1911 cocked and locked! He looked a little nervous when I asked him about it. But he relaxed after he realized that I wasn't busting his stones about it.

Philly PD is in the process of testing Glocks in .40S&W and .45ACP. Once approved the officers would have the choice of buying their own G22, G21, or G21SF much like they did when they switched from revolvers to the 9MM. The PPD would supply the ammo. It is also rumored they will be getting shotguns for patrol and some non-SWAT units will be getting surplus M16's from the military.

I carry a G21SF as a uniformed reserve deputy sheriff. Carried it last night at the Light-Up night in Aspinwall. We can carry either 40S&W or 45ACP, but no 9mm. A couple of the older grandfathered deputies still carry 38 revolvers.

    As a security guard I carry a SIG P220.

When I read this story, I was tempted to write a LTE blasting the police department for transforming a myth into an extra burden on taxpayers, and a diversion of funds from training. There is no real difference in "stopping power" between 9mm, .40, and .45... there's even a chance of 12ga shots to COM not being able to "stop" a person. Stopping power is the ability to rapidly put multiple shots into COM until the threat is stopped.

At any rate, I was too lazy to write a reply... maybe this weekend.

I know some of my dads friends are cops in Wyoming and they give them a 600.00 gun credit every 5 years or so to use towards a new service firearm of their choice it just has to be either a 9mm, .40SW or .45acp. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me. Also one of them moved to Alaska and works for the State Police and they also give some of the more senior officers (over 15 years exp) or officers that are on the CRT (crisis response team) a gun credit to purchase a firearm of their choosing.

Also a member of the LP township police i met in gas station seen me OCing on one of my range days, a rare time that I will OC, but he seen my M&P 9c and asked how i liked, and i said it hasn't let me down yet and that it was a great shooter. He said is department was in the process of testing out the regular M&P 9 in the 9mm flavor. He said he wished they would atleast of opted for the .40 or .45 instead of the 9 though.
