Default Some numbers to think about

Food for thought. I was Just thinking about different stats and relating them to guns. Most of the stats I am posting are from 2001 because that was the easiest year to get everything I was looking for. I mainly used two sites and what I am posting is by no means scientific on my part, just observations.

Basically what I get from the following, guns get the most press, but there are lot more things that are realistic threats to the average American than guns in the hands of honest citizens. Not to mention that while guns double as a sport, they have practical applications such as a source of food, and of course self defense.

The two sites I used for info.
    http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ss5307a1.htm
    http://www.sportssafety.org/sports-injury-facts/

    In 2001 there were

    802 unintentional firearm fatalities.
    8741 unintentional firearm non fatalities
Total 9543 total unintentional firearms related injuries/fatalities.
So honest gun owners were responsible for 9543 of the 29.7 million visits to the hospital that year.

    Compare that to the:
3.5 million children 14 and under receiving treatment for sports related injuries
    and the:

    99,722 gymnastic injuries
    680,307 basketball injuries
    170,902 baseball injuries
    118,354 softball injuries
    413, 620 football injuries
    163,000 soccer injuries
These 6 sports were responsible for 1,645,905 unintentional injuries. A lot more than the 9543 unintentional fire arm injuries that year.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
A few more numbers for 2001 all of the following are unintentional injuries.

    fatal non fatal
    firearms 802 8741
    machinery 648 298859
    motor vehicle 33396 2959859
    dog bite 25 365846
    poisoning 14078 519164
    struck by 898 4610361
    or against
    something

Also note that I am only counting non intentional firearms injuries in my numbers, not intentional firearm injuries because I am trying to draw parallels between honest gun owners and honest citizens partaking in all the other events listed above.
