removing dent from shotgun barrel
wondering if there is any way to remove a small dent (about the size of a pea) from the barrel of a shotgun? or should i take it to a smith. the dent is not deep, about 1/32 of an inch.

Re: removing dent from shotgun barrel
Firing a round through an obstruction in the barrel will pop that dent out.
Disclaimer: not recommended treatment.

Re: removing dent from shotgun barrel
There is a hydraulic dent removal tool for just this purpose. I've seen it in Brownell's catalog but I'm sure it will be cheaper to go to a gunsmith who has this tool than to buy the tool for one dent.
The older I get, the better I used to be.

Re: removing dent from shotgun barrel
Those dents with shotgun pressures when fired dont usually come out unless the barrel is very thin.
The tool mention above is typically what is needed.RIP: SFN, 1861, twoeggsup, Lambo, jamesjo, JayBell, 32 Magnum, Pro2A, mrwildroot, dregan, Frenchy, Fragger, ungawa, Mtn Jack, Grapeshot, R.W.J., PennsyPlinker, Statkowski, Deanimator, roland, aubie515, SteveWag

Re: removing dent from shotgun barrel
there are lots of different designs for tools to remove dents from shotgun barrels. they are as simple as a piece of rock maple turned to diameter on a woodworking lathe and sliced into a pair of mating shapes with tapers near the linear axis that can be inserted as a unit from one end, backed up with a dowel, and driven together to expand the dent. i have a set of 20/16/12 gauge expandable brass dent removers i bought in a gun auction for 3 bux. nobody else knew what they were...

Re: removing dent from shotgun barrel
the gun is an older winchester 101,the barrels seem thick to me so i don't know if putting a slug through it would work or not.but i thank you all for your replies.i do like the ideal of the hard wood wedges.if that don't work, hopefully a gun smith fix don't cost to much.

Re: removing dent from shotgun barrel
very funny.
truth is the old lady and i are in process of applying for an FFL type 1, so will soon be able to do this kind of gunsmithing work. it's been a hobby for the last 25 years, so maybe i can make a buck at it. in the meantime i just have to drive out the dents on my own shotguns...
