Default Hammer or striker fired, your experience, please.

All of my pistols have hammers. I am considered purchasing an XD in .45. I have avoided strikers, because I am intuitively, quite comfortable with M1911 platforms. My carry is a Kimber Ultra CDP II. However, I like the increased magazine capacity of the XD. From everyone's experience, have you had trouble transitioning from 1911s(or hammers) to a striker? I've carried 1911s since 1979, so I understand, I will need to do a lot of training, to change the muscle memory to a new weapon.

    Thanks,

    Mike

It's a training issue. If you spend enough time on a different trigger, you'll adapt. Yours is probably the more difficult direction to transition, but it's not a big deal by any means.

The XD's trigger isn't the greatest, and is in my opinion worse than the stock M&P. Glock has the best trigger of the three, unless you install an Apex trigger in the M&P. Train, train, and train some more.

I am a die hard 1911 enthusiast and right after purchasing my Glock, my strong hand thumb kept "searching" for the manual thumb safety on EVERY presentation on TD1 during the first training course I attended with it.

By TD2 it was no longer an issue.

The XD can get a PRP or Springer Precision trigger. They're much better.

It really is a training issue. The Apex trigger in M&P series pistols is fantastic.
I'm only here for the wood c-rings.

I brought this up recently with lycanthrope, when we were discussing whether maintaining commonality in manual of arms is beneficial, or a myth. I alternate between carrying a G19 and a Commander roughly every six months. Whenever I switch from the 1911 to the G19, I will sweep the non-existent thumb safety off every presentation for the first few dozen draws. Oddly though, the reverse never happens, in that I never forget to disengage the thumb safety after switching from the 19 to the 1911.

Unfortunately, I've never had the opportunity to try out an upgraded XD trigger. How does it compare to the Apex?

The XD trigger is serviceable stock, it just takes some getting used to. You are right, as in anything training is the key.

I prefer striker fired, don't like manual safeties, or DA/SA. I just bought a HK VP9 and the trigger needs no custom parts, also IMO neither does a Glock.

I've had a XD and currently have a M&9c and the triggers don't compare to Glock or HK.

I prefer hammer fired pistols for several reasons.

    1. They look cool.
    2. That single action trigger is usually better than any striker fired trigger.
    3. They can be used to hit the primer twice in the event of a misfire.
    4. That double action to me feels to be a better safety measure than a trigger safety.
    5. They look really cool on guns.
    6. I like metal framed guns. Is there even a striker fired metal framed gun out there?

Thank you. I have no words to describe the value you have contributed, to this discussion.
