    Default .30-06 or M14

I am looking into buying a new rifle, but I am torn on which to buy. Ive read that they both fire close to the same exact round, but saw that the .30-06 has a much longer range. Is that true? any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks

With off the shelf ammo, they perform closer than any 2 other cartridges.

What are you looking to do with the gun?

For now just target shooting, But eventually may use it to hunt. Which may bring up another problem can you hunt with an M14 in PA?

no semi auto rifle hunting in PA i believe.

ammo price is to be considered, surplus 7.62 NATO is going to be about $0.50 per rounds, closer to a dollar or more per round for commercial/hunting ammo.

Surplus Greek 30-06 from the CMP is alot less. almost half that of 7.62x51

ballistics are pretty much identical, just a shorter round and action length for the 308 over the '06. getcherself an M14- greaest battle rifle EVAH! And no, you can't use it to hunt in PA but you can in upstate NY(check local game regulations for specifics....) -Toby
