New Carry Gun
Last week I made the change and bought myself a Springfield XD Compact 45 ACP. I was looking for something a little smaller and lighter to carry everyday and the XD fit the bill. The compact frame makes it easy to conceal with the 10 rnd mag and I like having at least one 13 rnd mag as an extra. I have to say that I've taken a lot of hits for this since all my other carry guns have been 1911's. I'm a big 1911 fan and I still have one but I really liked the way this XD felt in my hands and have heard and read nothing but good things about them. So I broke down and bought one, I was a little concerned at first that the compact frame would be to small but that quickly changed after the first trip to the range. I took a varity of ammo (all 230 gr) with me to the range to include reloads and everything I fed the XD it ate. Ammo taken was Winchester white box FMJ, Remington FMJ and JHP, CCI Blazer FMJ, Federal Hydro Shocks and reloads that were FMJ. Every round fed to the XD was eaten and spit out with no failures what so ever. The recoil was not bad at all very controlable and double taps were no problem plus it's accurate. The biggest group fired was about 2" and all shooting that day was at 15yds. I have to say that I am very impressed with my new XD and I think I made a good choice in my new carry gun.
The gear that comes with the XD's are ok, the holster is not the greatest and is being replaced with a Blackhawk CQC Serpa, the mag carrier fairs a little better then the holster but it too is getting replaced with Blackhawk gear. The mag loader is the best piece of gear that comes with the XD especially with the 13 round mags, loading was made much eaiser plus it's a great thumb saver.
Ok enough talk, onto some pics.
Now all I need to do is find some more 13 rnd mags and at least 1 more 10 rndr."Laws that forbid the carrying of arms ... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. Nice!
I've been trying to decide between an XD compact and a 1911 for a few weeks now. Since you seem to have carried both, which do you think is easier to conceal in warm weather? I'm 5'10" 145lbs, so I need something easily concealable for the warm weather months.

Re: New Carry Gun
Congratulations! I've had a XD45C for a while now and I have every intention of using it as my day to day once I have completed my breakin and have found a self defense round that performs to my satisfaction. I actually like mine so much that I just picked up the 5" Tactical model for my collection. As far as magazines go I had to order my extras from Springfield about a month ago. They tell me that they are shipping them but I haven't seen them in any stores.

Re: New Carry Gun
I wore my 1911 in a owb holster and it was easy to conceal with an untucked pull over shirt. I have noticed that carrying the same way with the XD it seems to print a little more but that could be because of the holster that comes with it (not the greatest holster for carry). I hope to have my cqc serpa this weekend for the XD. I think the compact frame of my XD will make it easy to conceal and carry. I think you'll be happy with either gun both are great, it's just a matter of adjusting your dress to carry.

Re: New Carry Gun
I personally think the XD45 is the best of the polymer hybrids, not to mention the most accurate. If I had to choose between that and a 1911, there'd be no choice at all. 1911. That's just me though. If, for instance, I was outside a lot and perspired heavily, I'd carry a 1911 with a new fangled coating. If budget constraits wouldn't allow that, the XD would fit the bill nicely.
While at 6'4", 220, I have no problem concealing a 5"bbl, I really like commanders for carry also. I got a little Nighthawk with a bobtail and it disappears under anything."Happiness, is a warm gun." -St. John of Liverpool
