Old Browning Superposed

I was out looking for a o/u for some skeet/sporting/trap shooting this weekend and found a used Browning Superposed from the 1950's (I think from the Serial#). It's a shorter barrel length and doesn't haven't all the fancy engraving.

Anyone know anything about older Browning shotguns? Would it be worth the 900 bucks they're asking for?

Superposed shotguns are touted by some as the best over unders ever made. I think that would be debatable but they are fantastic. Some things you need to look out for. Are the barrels original length or have they been cut? Is the stock original length or has it been cut? Aftermarket pad added? Refinished? etc..

Original guns are in high demand. Salt wood problems are a huge issue too, but they really only fall in the 1966-1974ish period (small trigger gaurd tang and flat pistol grip knob). If the one you are looking at has original finish, and is unfooled with, and is a long tang round knob gun, then $900 is a VERY good deal.

Superposed are indeed great guns.

If you are looking for a great gun to mess around with, or do a little fun shooting...it would be a great gun. Also very good if you collect Browning shotguns.

Superposed parts are still around so no problems there.

Another thing to look at if you are going to use this gun is what the barrels are choked to. Full/mod isnt a real good combo for skeet or sporting clays.

If you are looking for a serious gun for trap/sporting/skeet and you have around $900...I would look for a newer Browning Citori with choke tube barrels.

For a collector...great gun.

and how would I tell how the barrels are choked?

When you open the action on the shotgun, up near the breach end there are ***. Those marks will denote choke in Browning shotguns.

Long tang and short tang are easy to see. Look behind the trigger gaurd under the shot gun. The metal tang of the trigger gaurd will stop right after the hump of the trigger gaurd on short tang models. long tang models will go back on the stock several inches and also have screws in them. "Most" long tang guns tend to be round knob pistol grip too. And most short tang tend to be flat knob.
