As I understand it, pepper spray must be registered with the local police. You might be able to carry a knife according to the info I found here.

Nah. Just say "I voted for Obama". That's all the protection you'll need.
So this is how liberty dies...with thunderous applause.

Obviously no firearms at all but you already knew that part. I believe that a knife may be legal but who the heck really knows there. I used to go to DC pretty often with my job a couple of years ago. I used to ALWAYS carry my tactical older and my E2C light (day or night).
I know that this will sound strange because DC has very high crime statistics but I actually felt relatively safe in what I call the "Federal area" of the city. I always stayed within a few blocks of the White House and my office was near there as well. We used to walk around a good amount at night and there are police of many type all over the darn place.
I am DEFINITELY not saying that you shouldn't stay alert and in condition yellow the entire time you that you are there.
I went up the Washington Monument a few years ago and the new security is very much like what the TSA has at the airports including metal detectors and x-ray for all bags, purses fanny packs, etc. The knife and possibly the E2C light are definitely an issue there.
Have a great trip with your family and Stay Safe.
