Dumb Question on pronunciations
I am looking at possibly picking up a Hungarian M95 Mannlicher Carbine. How the heck do you properly pronounce "Mannlicher?" I was told it's pronounced man-licker and I don't want to believe it. LOL
I hear a lot of people pronounce the Mosin Nagant as mo-sin but I know that it is really pronounced moi-seen. I know that much of this is irrelevant to most folks but I research the history of the firearms so those little details are important to me.

Re: Dumb Question on pronunciations
I would be more vocal about it if it were a chick licker but if it's a man licker, I'm keeping my mouth shut, or simply call it an M95.
Here is information on the Mosin:
"Sergei Ivanovich Mosin (pronouced "Moi-seen") was born My 5, 1849. He entered into a military academy at age 12 where he excelled as a soldier. In 1867, he entered the Alexandrovskoye Military High School in Moscow. Upon leaving Alexandrovskoye in 1870, he decided to go to the artillery branch and transferred to the Mikhailovskoye Artillery Academy. He graduated in 1875 and transferred to the Tula Arsenal where he became the head of the machining division. It was here he began his career as a weapons designer by first making improvements to the Berdan II and later the collaboration with Nagant to design the Rifle of Three Lines of the Year 1891. Mosin eventually rose to the rank of Colonel and was appointed as the director of the Sestroretsk arsenal. He died on February 8, 1902 and was buried in Tula."

Re: Dumb Question on pronunciations
Huh,
Kind of like the media when they changed the planet Uranus to Urinaus all because they thought it inappropriate to say 'Your-Anus' on TV -- Even though Millions of us were taught that as the correct pronunciation in school.
I say -- As long as the person you're talking to understands you, Then anyway you say it will be just fine. Just my 0.000005 cents worth.

Re: Dumb Question on pronunciations
7.62x54r.net and other Mosin dedicated sites say in its native tongue, it is pronounced "mo-seen". Over the years though, having been to all over the world, variations that sound like "moi" have come up.
The Nagant part is said to be pronounced with the "t" silent, like "na-gon".
Steyr I believe sounds like you said, "Stire". I have no idea about the Mannlicher, but I always thought it was "man-licker" as well.

Hey Pector,
Didn't mean to get you in trobule with the PC Police.
I think Garpman is on to something, All these fine works of art have seen worldwide distrubution, So there is bound to be variations on the common theme.
Good Luck
