The A3/A4 configuration doesn't have the permanently fixed carry handle on top of the upper receiver. Without the optional carry handle with A2 sights that upper would then be referred to as a "flat top upper". This means that you can use the MIL-STD-1913 rails to mount whatever you may choose (i.e. red dot, scope, etc...).

Go flat top. If you want irons you can always add detachables......but if you ever want to add optics, it can be hard to work around the carry fixed handle.

I agree, flat top is the way to go, it you have a handle on the top and you want optics, your line of sight is going to be very high.

If it you buy a detachable carry-handle model-cool. (that's an A3) Now you can do whatever your purse and/or dreams can imagine. If you buy an A2 fixed-carry handle model..you limit yourself to that set of iron sights with the capability to add a scope on top..not ideal for future upgrades. Do it work? Depends on the job in mind. You gotta know where you heart will take ya..you know the real Assault rifle is still the 1st one..Henry Rifle?
