Did i just waste 20 bucks?

while i was at Bass Pro Shop this weekend i picked up a box of Winchester Supreme SXT 230gr .45 ACP rounds. i asked on of the guys behind the gun counter about them and he said they were just the Black Talon rounds under a new name, now my question is all that i have found on the net about them is that they are untested and not worth it cause they just mushroom like any regualr JHP. can anyone direct me to some real test results or comfirm to me that i need to just go back to my Hydra-Shok rounds.

From a quick google search, I've found its the same exact thing, just a different name.

Apparently Black Talon was highly offensive to the anti's, and after a media backlash, they pulled all of them, and re-labeled them as SXT.

EXACTLY they always did. they were never nessisarily "the best" they just happened to get singled out.

The key to Black Talons was that the cuts in the JHP were deep enough that when the round expanded, it formed a star and literally cut through the tissue. The only difference is that now it stays together, rather than starring, on impact. I personally use Remington Golden Sabers or Speer's as defensive loads.

yeah i got Speer Golden Dot rounds for my wifes Bersa 380 Lite that we got this weekend but i think i was misled on the Supreme SXT rounds, probably going to go back to my hydra-shok rounds.

There is nothing wrong with the Winchster Ranger Ts...just make sure it's the real SXT's versus the stuff that Cabela's carries. The box should be brown with yellow print. There are two types of Ranger T's floating around, so make sure you get the correct one.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that the stuff Bass Pro is the same brand that Cabela's is selling. Most of the time, the real Ranger Ts will run you $25 for 45ACP.

If they are the civillian Supreme SXT's and not the Rangers, then you just wasted $20. As for going back to hydrashocks....they're a 20 year old design. Outdated, subpar performance. Find some real winchester rangers or gold dots or some modern police JHP.

Ranger Talons/SXT's/Black Talons/Hydrashocks were the best at some point, but there are similar or even better choices out there now.

I currently carry Federal HST and/or Tactical Bonded after going from Hydrashocks to Speer Gold Dots to Talons and then to Doubletap Gold Dots.

Black Talons earned a name for themselves back in the day but it was really unwarranted. The sharp "flower petals" that opened were more dangerous to ER and OR docs (danger of cutting fingers removing bullets resulting in possible HIV, HEP B etc exposure) then they were to the people shot. They are not bad bullets-just not GREAT, THE BEST or EVIL bullets as the media tried to suggest they were. In many loads they were actually underloaded and had less velocity and ft-lbs per given bullet weight than other loads.
