Hostile beggars
Ever since I moved up by Broad and Dauphin, I've been experiencing more "hostile" beggars than usual. Closer to the campus, the beggars just ask for change and you can politely tell them "no" and go on your merry way. Recently, I've been having to deal with harassment and belittlement every time I deny their request for change.
OK, this has to do with concealed carry, I promise.
Last night, my roommate and I were walking back home from a friend's house. While we were walking up our block, a man approximately 1/4 of a block behind us appeared (he came from the intersecting street) and yelled to us "Can I get a quarter?"
Roommate: No
Man: How about a dollar then?
Roommate: No
Man: Fucking white boys.
We kept walking at a steady pace but the man changed directions and started walking rapidly up our block, following us.
Man: It's because I'm black. You don't want to help out a black guy.
Roommate: It doesn't matter what color you are, I wouldn't have gave you money anyway.
Man: What the fuck did you say, bitch? Pussy ass white boy, what the fuck did you say?
Roommate: *repeats himself*
The guy was probably 30-40 feet behind us now. I was at threat level orange at this point. I was hoping he didn't have a knife or was about to attack us... so I had my hand near my gun ready to draw just in case. We finally reached our house but kept walking because we didn't want him to know where we lived. I kept looking behind my back and noticed that he stopped in the middle of the street... just staring at us.
Man: Yea, keep walking white boys...
And on that note he turned around and went in the opposite direction. Once he was gone, we went back to the house and locked all the doors. This is the third person who has made a "fucking white boy" remark to me in 2 days after I don't give them money - it was the first time I've been followed though.
Anybody else in Philly have to deal with this shit? I can't wait to move back to Bethlehem after this semester is over.Last edited by uniballin; September 9th, 2009 at 11:10 AM.

Re: Hostile beggars
The definition of what you have just described is "attempted robbery".

Re: Hostile beggars
The best part is... I can't even protect myself when I have to walk home from my night class in the dark! You would think that Temple would realize that most of their students live off campus in the surrounding GHETTO and would let students CC for their own protection.

Re: Hostile beggars
I assumed from the title that this would be a discussion of the IRS.

Re: Hostile beggars
And I thought we were a post-racial nation now that we have a black man in the White House! Seems like the "its because I'm black" attitude has become more prevalent since Nov. '08.
Power always thinks...that it is doing God's service when it is violating all his laws.

Re: Hostile beggars
Doesn't matter.. racism is a one way street my friend... wait... nevermind.
I hear more blacks pulling the "race card" more now than I ever have. I'm all for equality, don't get me wrong, but this shit's getting really.. REALLY old. How long must our nation as a whole pay for something that happened 200+ years ago? And if you really want to get into it, how many other oppressed races/ethnicities are constantly pulling the card? "It's because I'm Jewish, right?".. Or, "It's because I'm Irish?" .. come on. Can't honestly say any other historically oppressed peoples pulling it.. Time to grow up and take responsibility instead of expecting things for nothing.
But yes ROCK.. I agree with you.III%

Re: Hostile beggars
I went to Temple main campus and commuted every day. A good portion of their students do. And for as much as they light up their campus and offer escorts, they can't be everywhere at once. How many times within the past month have we had stories on here of students being attacked?

Re: Hostile beggars
You do know slavery was abolished by the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865? 144 years ago.
And segregation lasted through the 1960's.
De facto segregation exists through today.
In 1998, Lending institutions have been shown to treat black mortgage applicants differently when buying homes in white neighborhoods than when buying homes in black neighborhoods.
However, none of this gives a black man the right to attack a white man because he won't give him a quarter.
