And how do they come by those statistics?

I'm wary of all statistics because how easily they can be fudged. There are sources for their data and I know absolutely nothing about this website, which is obviously Tea Party/Conservative leanings. Same is said for all the liberal rants as well, just don't believe everything I read or hear.

There's nothing "real" about this number. They take the "statistic" that guns are used in self defense 2.5 million times a year from the 1995 Kleck/Gertz study -- which would be about once every 13 seconds. The counter just ticks over every 13 seconds and will end the year at 2,425,846.

I believe Kleck's claim was that there were upwards of 3m "DGU's" per year.

That was my first thought as well. You know what they say about great minds... they often end up dissected or in jars with jelly!

We'll never know exactly for sure because most cases will go undiscovered (i.e. individuals don't want to talk about it and/or neither does the press) but it sure isn't a small number.

This statistic would mean that more than 1 out of every 250 Americans would have used a gun in self defense in the first half of 2011 alone. Do not believe all statistics.
